Navya started her acting career with a role in the Malayalam drama Ishtam while she was still at school (2001). Starring alongside veteran Dileep as Anjana, Navya got a lukewarm response to the results.
She was then cast in the Mazhathullikkilukam Malayalam comedy (2002), which at the box office fared better. Nevertheless, it was with her third movie Nandanam (2002) that she got widespread acclaim for her work. Navya received the Filmfare Award for Best Actress, the Kerela State Award for Best Actress, and the Asianet Award for Best Actress, testing the personality of Balamani, a young orphaned child.
